When I began my journey into Reiki, I was eager to immerse myself in this transformative practice. I dedicated the two years after being initiated into Reiki to learning as much as I could about it by reading books, blogs, websites, and by practicing Reiki on myself and others.

My Reiki I and II classes were taught in the Western lineage, while my Reiki III (master level) was in the Eastern lineage. When I began my practice I considered myself a Usui Reiki “purist,” wanting to practice just Reiki (as I understood it to be), not wanting to incorporate crystals, oracle cards, or sound bowls or anything else.
As time went on, I opened myself up to more possibilities, and it has been really fun.
As I delved deeper, I discovered six key lessons that have enriched my understanding and practice of Reiki. Here are my personal insights on these lessons.
1. Embrace the Evolution of Reiki
Reiki, at its core, is energy.
Understanding that the Usui method is a guiding framework rather than a strict set of rules has been liberating. Even Mikao Usui, the founder, adapted his teachings over time. This flexibility allows Reiki to flourish and connect people across the globe, which I find incredibly inspiring.
As a Reiki practitioner, nurture a compassionate and empathetic approach. These qualities strengthen the healing connection between you and your clients, creating a safe and supportive environment.
2. Appreciate Reiki's Oral Tradition
Reiki is largely passed down orally, from Reiki masters to students, which allows teachings to evolve naturally. As it is passed down, personal perspectives coerce the teachings, and some things may even have been omitted from what they originally learned because that teacher didn’t find it useful to their own teachings.
I find it fascinating how these teachings have remained consistent yet adaptable over generations, meeting the needs of contemporary practitioners.
It is also important to recognize that Western Reiki teachings and Eastern Reiki teachings can differ significantly. While they share a common foundation, each has unique interpretations and practices. Being open to these variations can enhance your practice and provide a broader perspective on the healing art.
3. Learn from Diverse Practices
The diversity within Reiki practices is vast and enlightening. Different traditions and adaptations offer unique perspectives that enrich our collective knowledge. Embracing this diversity has broadened my understanding and enhanced my potential for healing.
In your Reiki practice, replace judgment with curiosity. When you encounter a technique or belief that seems different, instead of thinking, “That’s not Reiki,” try saying, “That’s different from what I was taught… tell me more.” This approach opens doors to learning and understanding, fostering a more inclusive and enriching experience.

4. Foster a Non-Competitive Spirit
One of the most rewarding aspects of my Reiki journey has been the spirit of inclusivity and support within the community. Cultivating a non-competitive atmosphere is crucial for genuine connections and mutual support, which are vital for the community’s growth and harmony.
5. Value Reiki’s Adaptability
Reiki's adaptability is one of its greatest strengths. It serves the highest good for both practitioners and recipients, allowing for unique journeys that raise vibrations and foster healing in diverse contexts. This adaptability is something I deeply value in my practice.
While learning from different teachings and practitioners, remember to honor your own unique journey. Integrate what resonates with you and always stay true to your personal growth and understanding of Reiki.
6. Commit to Continuous Learning
Reiki is not a static practice but a dynamic journey of growth and discovery. Continually seek new knowledge and perspectives to deepen your understanding and effectiveness as a practitioner.
Engaging with the shared wisdom within the Reiki community has been invaluable.
Continuous learning has deepened my appreciation and understanding of Reiki, reinforcing my belief in its power to connect and heal on a global scale.
By incorporating these lessons into my practice, I feel equipped to navigate the dynamic landscape of Reiki. This journey has not only fostered my personal growth but has also strengthened the broader healing community.
As Reiki continues to evolve, I remain confident in its ability to raise vibrations and forge spiritual connections worldwide.
